The Sound of Bells

Web browser and web access

The tests use only standard browser facilities and should work in all current browsers. The tests have been done successfully over dial-up lines but may be a little slow. They work fine over a broadband link of any speed.

Exactly how the tests appear on the screen depends on how your browser is set to play sound files. If they are played in the browser, then you can have the browser full screen or set to any convenient size that allows the whole of each test to be displayed. If the sound files are played outside the browser (e.g. in Windows Media or QuickTime) then for convenience you should size the browser window and the media player to sit alongside each other on the screen, like this:

Setting up Windows Media Player

These tests have been extensively tested on a PC with Windows Media Player. If you are having problems playing the test sounds and have Windows Media installed, you can temporarily make it the default player for the sound files used. To do this, run Windows Media (from the Start menu, if you do not have an icon) and then access the configuration screen by selecting Tools | Options... from the menu bar. In the Options screen, select the File Types tab. A screen such as the following should appear:

Ensure the checkbox for 'Windows audio file (wav)' is selected to play in Windows Media Player.

Test sounds

To test your configuration, click on the following two links: Test Sound 1 and Test Sound 2. If both sounds play correctly you are ready to take the tests. If the second test sound opens in a new window or runs a second copy of your sound player there is a problem with your configuration and you should not try to take the tests. Thanks anyway for trying.
